The one-week funeral rites of the Asantehemaa (Queenmother), Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II took place on the 24th of November at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The Asantehemaa who also happens to be the biological mother of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was born in 1907 and was enstooled in 1977. The occasion was graced by various dignitaries including the sitting President of Ghana, President John Mahama, two former Presidents, H.E. J. J. Rawlings and H.E. J. A. Kufuor and two political party flagbearers, Nana Akufo-Addo (NPP) and Nana Konadu Rawlings (NDP), wife of former President Rawlings. The Asantehene appeared in a palanquin dressed in pitch black cloth and wielding a single-barreled gun. He was also chewing cola nut to signify a state of mourning. Otumfuo then sat in state and received consoling handshakes from delegations and traditional leaders.
The oral examination of the businessman, Mr. Alfred Woyome which was slated to take place on the 24th of November, 2016, did not take place due to a notice served to both Mr. Amidu and the Attorney General for the Stay of proceedings. Mr. Woyome is seeking to reverse a Supreme Court order directing him to avail himself for oral examination. The court has adjourned the case to Thursday, 1st December, 2016 for Mr. Woyome’s lawyer to move the motion for stay of proceedings. All parties have also been directed to file their responses before the next hearing.
The incoming Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres on 24th November, 2016 met with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Guterres who was a former Prime Minister of Portugal, seeks to use former relationships developed with Russia during his tenure as Prime Minister to aid in reducing global conflict. Guterres will take over from Ban Ki-Moon on 1st January, 2017.
