The Bitter Reminder

The important thing is not to be bitter over life’s disappointments.
Learn to let go of the past and recognize that everyday won’t be sunny.

And when you find yourself lost in the darkness and despair,

Remember it is only in the black of night the light shines brightest;

And the darkness cannot comprehend it because Christ will deliver for your sake.

The buzzing of the phone interrupted the late afternoon nap Eric had so eagerly been looking forward to, considering he had been driving around town through traffic from morning through till midday. Unfortunately for him, he had forgotten to switch the cell off or better still set it to flight mode after he had settled  in his room and had hurriedly catapulted himself unto the fluffy king-sized bed. Now about half an hour into the nap his “best companion” of a phone had jostled him from dreamland with a feeling of mild disappointment showing in his sigh. He stole a glance at the number that appeared and was pensive for a moment. He didn’t recognize the number. Reluctantly, he answered padding his back with the extra pillows that lay around as he sat upright.

With a slight yawn the young man responded in hallowed tones, ‘Hello, this is Eric’.  There was a slight pause from the other side, no one responded. ‘Hello, this is Eric’ he retorted in more diplomatic tones this time around in response to the silence. A laugh suddenly burst through the speaker from the other end. ‘Massa, Massa!!! Save your diplomacy for the ladies’. He had instantly recognized the voice he heard and burst into laughter himself. ‘Manpower Eddie!!!!’, Eric shouted with the sleepiness disappearing  as if he had been injected a boost of caffeine. Eddie was his roommate back in high school and the two had grown to be good friends but had lost touch in final year of the university when Eddie had to travel to go live with his parents in the UK. The reasons for the nickname ‘Manpower’ no one knew, but they had all come to love the guy for his charisma and concern for others.

The two hadn’t spoken in a while and they had a lot of catching up to do. Eric explained how pensive he was about answering the call after he did not recognize the number. Quite expectedly, the other admitted he intentionally waited till that time of the afternoon to call just so he could disturb his nap. The two knew themselves too well. As the conversation grew, Eddie served Eric a painful reminder when he asked about his relationship status. For a moment, Eddie thought he was going to hear how his buddy had made plans in earnest to settle down with Eyram. Much to his disappointment, the couple had broken up a year ago –the details of which Eric told his friend not to ask of. The reminder had brought some gruesome pictures to mind and suddenly the latter’s demeanor had changed. Suffice to say it was that bad.

The two had talked it over with Eric encouraging him as they used to do back in the day. Young Christian youth as they were, they had much to expect from life than just the unpleasant curveballs life threw at them. They had begun to laugh again, occasionally arguing about football as young men their age usually did. ‘We should meet up. How does Saturday afternoon sound?’ Eric asked as they were about ending the call. ‘Anytime, brother’, the other responded as they exchanged goodbyes with Eddie making some silly jokes.

 Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “They are plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and future.”

God bless.
