Ella sat, facing the wall, on her bed in her room. She pouted her lips out of anger to no one in particular. She knew this Friday was going to be a very long one. Both her roommates had been whisked away by their boyfriends to a romantic date. She rolled her eyes and pouted some more.
It wasn’t that she wanted to get a boyfriend, that was one of the last things on her mind. She just hated how her friend’s boyfriends couldn’t leave her to have them on special days too. She had existed way before they even considered coming into the picture.
A short, gentle knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. Sighing, she dragged herself out of bed to the door and unlocked it.
‘Tadaaaa!’ Thelma screamed, simultaneously opening a pack of cupcakes.
Ella jumped back in fright and held her chest.
‘For goodness sake it’s not my birthday! And aren’t you supposed to be out on a date? Ella replied while walking back to her bed.
‘You lazy, ungrateful girl, you didn’t even take the cupcakes from me.’ Thelma had already walked into the room and was gingerly placing the box containing the six colourful cakes on the rickety study table beside her bed.
Thelma was a fifth year student reading optometry while Ella had just began her second year as a Publishing Student. Ella had joined Thelma in the hostel right from her first year and a budding relationship had began between the two despite their age difference.
‘OK, so first of all…’ Thelma began ‘I didn’t go anywhere with Ted. He isn’t even in town and secondly I knew you would be sitting alone in the room sulking and pouting like you are doing now.’
‘I am not!’ Ella exclaimed, covering her mouth in the process.
‘O really? Then why are you covering your mouth? Thelma asked defiantly with her hands resting on her hips. She sat on her bed and patted the space beside her.
‘Come join me.’
‘Noooo! You are going to do that big sisterly talk which I detest.’ Ella grumbled and allowed her body to fall unto her bed.
‘O come on Ella, I won’t do that to you.’ Thelma coaxed, still patting the bed.
Ella dragged herself out of bed and plopped herself onto Thelma’s bed.
‘You need to find something vibrant to do with your single life.’ Thelma began
‘Tell me about it.’ Ella mumbled.
‘I am serious.’ Thelma stated bluntly.
Ella remained silent, staring at the ceiling.
‘I was single for four years before Ted strudded in, but believe me when I say I wasn’t a horrible pouting bag like you.’ Thelma said and giggled.
‘That’s not funny Thelma.’
‘OK I am sorry…but in the time before Ted came, I had fun, I was always available for most church activities, I visited friends, tried cooking new meals took myself out on treats and the list goes on and on.. You on the other hand…..’
‘Me on the other hand?’ Ella asked and sat up.
‘You on the other hand don’t go a-n-y-w-h-e-r-e. You decline all the church meet ups, refuse to pamper yourself and complain of your weight. I saw Trish come in earlier to ask that you join in the church evangelism at Evandy but you declined. Meanwhile you have been sitting in here the whole day doing nothing!’
‘Its….’ Ella began.
‘Its nothing Ella. Don’t even bring up one of your excuses. You need to enjoy being single.. I mean enjoy not just tolerate it. A man won’t make you happy if you are not happy without him. I know you have a relationship with Christ so that isn’t the problem .
Ella slouched and exhaled loudly.
‘I guess you said the truth.’
‘You guess? ….eeii madam you can….,’ Thelma replied
‘You have a point ma’am. I will change.’ Ella replied and paused. Then she began stretching her hand out towards the box of cupcakes.
Thelma pushed her hand away.
‘No cup cakes for you. You didn’t even help me bring them in!’
‘O come on!’ Ella exclaimed throwing her hands in the air.
God bless you
