Eli heaved a sigh of relief as she closed the door behind her and leaned on it. She had expected to have left the church premises, the dining hall, by 3:00 pm but things had not fallen into place. She and the other executives left at 6:00pm and the traffic she encountered while returning to her room off campus had made her finally enter her room after 7:30pm.
She loosened her grip on her bag and slowly sank into the carpetted floor. Tears streamed down her cheeks and she moaned silently. She wanted someone to hold her and tell her it was going to be alright. She wanted someone to whisper into her ears and tell her she had strength to pull through.
She felt trapped. She had known while entering her relationship that it wasn’t the right time yet she had done so. She had seen Philip as spiritual and the best husband but now everything was upside down. He came to campus every other week to see her and for the past two months each visit had ended up in sex. She couldn’t take it anymore. She wanted to stop. To erase the past, to stop feeling guilty but she felt worse. Her phone began to ring in her bag but she ignored it.
She continued to sob and the phone continued to ring. Whoever was calling might have an urgent issue at hand. She wiped her cheeks with the back of her right hand and searched for her phone in her bag with the left while clearing her throat. She silently prayed it wasn’t Philip, she didn’t think she could stand up to him-at least not now, not after what happened on Friday.
She finally found the phone and answered, ‘Hello?’
‘Hello Mama Eli, please can I speak with you?’
Brian sat on his bed deep in thought. He had a quiz the next day and hadn’t had time to revise his notes. He wanted to go through the notes but he had received a call from home that his mum had been rushed to the hospital again. She had had another epileptic attack. He didn’t know what to do. He wanted so bad to go home and sit by her and pray with her. He knew he couldn’t call his father, he might not even be in the country and even if he was, his new wife would prevent him from going over to see his mum.
His tummy rumbled in hunger and he remembered he hadn’t eaten anything the whole day.
Another sigh came from him. He was out of money and honestly didn’t know where to get food from. His roommates weren’t around and hadn’t been around since he returned from church. Just then, he heard a knock on his door. He slowly got up from the bed and walked towards the door.
Seline quickly rushed to clean up the mess she had made in the kitchen while cooking for Kofi. He was coming over for supper and she had prepared some jollof for him.
He had sounded serious over the phone and had asked that they take a walk when he came so they discuss some issues. She had been taken aback but still agreed. After ending the call with him, she decided to lighten the mood by preparing his favourite meal. Her roommate had gone for a sleepover at her boyfriend’s end so she had the room to herself and Kofi.
